My Approach

I structure treatment to meet the individual needs and goals of my clients. For the first 2-3 sessions, I will focus on getting to know you and your concerns so that we can collaboratively establish a treatment plan. For some clients, that may include filling out self-report questionnaires and establishing a diagnosis to assist with treatment planning.

My approach begins with developing a safe therapeutic relationship. My goal is to guide you towards making changes that ease your suffering and enhance your well-being so that you can lead a fulfilling life. As a clinician and a researcher, I use treatments that are well supported by research, including motivational interviewing, cognitive-behavioural therapies, acceptance and commitment therapy, and interpersonal psychotherapy.

In am involved in both scholarly and clinical organizations and am currently the President of the Society for the Study of Emerging Adulthood. I am also a member of the Research Society on Alcoholism, the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers, and the Canadian Psychological Association.

In addition to my private practice, I am an Associate Professor of Clinical and Counselling Psychology at the University of Toronto, where I teach, supervise students and maintain an active program of research on substance use, mental health and well-being in emerging adulthood.
